#68013 Tank Has A Cold

Posted by crusty on 20 November 2017 - 01:52 PM in Health

No swabs taken, they said they prefer to use a multispectral antibiotic to start with then do the swabs after a couple of weeks if he hasn't improved.

He's not eating much but he didn't this time last year either as he wants to hibernate which won't be happening now.

He's got runny nose syndrome, he had one antibiotic injection on Saturday and is due to have another this coming Thursday, also nose drops twice a day.

#67953 Tank Has A Cold

He's 5 years old weighs 158g and has a length of 95mm which gives him a ratio of 0.184 so he's on the light side but still just within the specs.

I have an appointment with Trinity vets in Maidstone on the 11th so we'll see what the vet says and go from there.

Yes still eating fine and stomping around his table.

#67944 Tank Has A Cold

Posted by crusty on 30 October 2017 - 11:09 AM in Health

I think Tank has a cold (for want of a better description) his nose has a dew drop sometimes and he does what looks like sneezing,

I was going to start his wind down today but it looks like a trip to the vet instead.

I live in Whitstable Kent and the vet we use for our cats is Animed, I've no idea if they are any good with Tortoises.

#67789 Tanks First Sun Of The Year

Here's Tank getting stuck into a dandelion flower, he eats lots of leaves but dandelion is the only flower he really likes, he will literally run to a dandelion flower :)

Well Tank hasn't taken any interest in the cold frame at all, so we decided to take it away and replace it with two good sized rocks he can bask on, should he see fit to :)

#67761 Tanks New Outside Enclosure.

Posted by crusty on 05 July 2017 - 12:31 PM in Outdoor Enclosures

We had a bit of a fright on Sunday, when we built the enclosure we made a cave for Tank to hide in, you can see it in the first picture with the brick in front of it, he managed to fall off the rock and ended up on his back, we didn't notice for at least an hour, maybe more, my wife found him motionless and thought the worse, thankfully he's ok. but if it had been earlier full sun and we'd been at work it might have been very different.

As you can see in the second picture we've filled it in and made a bit of a gentler slope, lesson learned! it just goes to show an enclosure is never finished and is constantly evolving.

The purple plantain has come on brilliantly, I didn't realise the leaves would get so big, Tank loves them :)

It certainly is, he doesn't eat anything down to the ground, he tends to graze, a bite here, a bite there, proper foraging.

I have to say it's come on better than I thought it would in such a short time, pleased as punch :)

The weed garden behind the greenhouse has gone mad  the silly thing is the enclosure is doing so well that I don't need any of this at the moment, there's more than he can eat in there.

but better to have too much than not enough :)

I whole heartedly agree, Tank is having a whale of a time living outside, and it I'm loving watching him too (when I can find him that is)

The electrics are now finished, all I need to do now is fine tune the height of the bulb, it's 100w but I might change it for 75w if it gets too hot.

Hi, can I have some help identifying these two plants please. the one in the greenhouse I have no idea where it's come, the one that's outside was given to me by my father in-law many years ago and I thought it was called Selene but Google says otherwise.

cheers

The protective covers are finished now, it's not as pretty as it might be but at least he can go out now unsupervised, when it's warm enough.

Just the electrics to sort now, hopefully this weekend :)

#67453 Tanks New Outside Enclosure.

Posted by crusty on 22 March 2017 - 07:16 AM in Outdoor Enclosures

I think putting the thought into an enclosure really does help the set up in the long run, me and the hubby sit for ages discussing it I say can we do this he tells me if it will work or not and come up with some thing else, my enclosure took months to do. :)

It's the same with us, it's been in the planning since Christmas, most of the research was from this forum, it's been very informative and helpful, it's one of the reasons I started this thread, I hope it might help and inspire others, also looking at pictures of tortoises in their natural enviroment as well helped too.

You mean my wife and I  you're right we've put a great deal of thought into this and I simply couldn't have done it with out her, it really is a joint effort, but it's been a lot of fun as well as hard work,

really looking forward to the finishing it and the weather getting warmer so we can get Tank out enjoying himself :)

Finished the framework for the security netting this weekend, next is to attach the actual wire to it, we've made it in three separate sections so different parts of the enclosure can be accessed as required, also completed the weed bed behind the greenhouse, planted it up young plants and sowed some seeds :)

One piece of advice I give to anyone thinking of embarking on a similar project, finish all the woodwork and frame building before planting it up, it would have been a lot easier this weekend if I'd done so, but hindsight is a wonderful thing

#67441 Weed Id Help

Posted by crusty on 15 March 2017 - 11:03 PM in Identified Plants & Weeds

Thanks, not heard of that one until now, I live in Kent, not sure why we have it either, I've never noticed it before, but then again I never took such an interest in weeds before :)

This is where we're up to now, most of the planting is done and just needs to mature now, hopefullly we're make it secure at the weekend (our main worry around here are foxes, crows, magpies and seagulls)

Then it's just the electrics to sort.

#67438 Weed Id Help

Posted by crusty on 15 March 2017 - 08:48 AM in Identified Plants & Weeds

Thank you ladies, I thought the middle one might be prickly sow thistle but wasn't sure, the first one there is lots of in the garden and in the alley behind my house, so if it is edible that would be another nice addition to his diet, I agree about the third one, I have a feeling it's not a good one for torts but just not sure what it actually is.
