All the warm sunshine in this unlikely hibernation pit brought Lola out to see what was going on yesterday. With no intention of going back and a desire to explore the garden, she had a quick nibble and a bath and joined the pile of leaves in the greenhouse to await her friends emerging. Much earlier than usual, but the spot was extremely sheltered and a mid day sun trap. Had I known where she was Id have kept the area covered a while longer.

That’s great, Sue, even if it is a little early. It’s always fab to see them again after hibernation; Harry’s due up in March, I can’t wait to see him again. I’ll be glad when the weather improves so that I can get out in the garden to tidy up and prepare.

Hope all your other torts emerge safely soon.

Yes, March would have been much better Graham. There are signs of soil movement in the greenhouse though, so the others are on the way. It’s going to be a strange year this year as no more babies either

Good she is well and active Sue.

 

I have been checking on mine and there has been slight movement in box with the weather getting warmer but shes not fully awake yet. Really looking forward to see her come out.

Well, she’s gone back down now to the others, so I’m ok with that. It used to be thought that once up they mustn’t go back, but it happens in the wild, so I’m happy for my tortoises to follow suit. I’ve 18 Carol , so too many. I’m not breeding from my clan any more though, so that will help with the tortoise chores. I have some babies from last year, but one they have certs, that will be the last.....incubators sold etc etc

Wow 18 yes a lot of work..  but I bet very enjoyable and amusing.

 

I worry about 1 never mind 18 .

Haha, hoping to start downsizing this year, but only to the right homes. I’m not getting any younger, so each year is a bit more demanding. No more babies after this last lot have gone to new homes, so that will be a huge difference. Very mixed feelings

My Tank went down in the greenhouse on Oct 26th.

 

No sign of him yet, it's the first time he's hibernated in the greenhouse, can't wait to see him :-)

I think the most satisfying thing about natural hibernation is to see how well hydrated they are when they emerge.....no need for forced soaks etc. I’d not go back to box hibernation now Tank will be up very soon Crusty
