I built an outdoor enclosure over the weekend for our new hermann tortoises (eastern) and want to ask a question about the heat lamp at night.  I have searched for the answer to this questions many times but keep getting confliciting responses.

The torts are 2 months old and we got them from the breeder this weekend.  The question is, should I turn off the heat lamp at night?  The overnight temps are around 5 degrees centigrade.  We would turn the lamp on again at 8am in the morning.  They have plenty of substrate to dig down into and we have seen them doing that already.

We dont plan on hibernating them this winter as the are so young (this was what we were told by the breeder).

thank you!

Hi welcome to the forum. :)

It's quite cold now, you might be best to bring the torts inside into a tortoise table until next year when it warms up again, they wont need any additional heat on a night indoors, but outside they would need some thing like a tube heater on a thermostat to keep the temps from dropping to low, 5 degrees is too cold for them, none of my hatchlings are outside now. :)

Thank you Karen - the weather has warmed up now and they seem very happy.  At night they bed down in their substrate in their sleeping box (closed area at the back of the outdoor enclosure) and then come out to the heat lamp in the morning.
