This might sound a silly question but surely a tortoise will suffocate in a fridge? It's something I'm contemplating but not sure about

Hi,

No they wont suffocate, you do need to open the door daily for air exchange, I've hibernated using a fridge method for a lot of years with great success. :)

Many thanks. I just feel a bit apprehensive about her hibernating but she has for the last 35 years or so

Also, think about natural hibernation in the wild. If you stuck a dog in a hole it would suffocate, but a tortoise goes gradually deeper as it gets colder. As it gets colder, metabolism and so breathing drops to virtually zero, hence no suffocation ;)

Many thanks. This is all very new to me and I don't want to do anything that will harm her
