And this is what happens when those who think the supermarket diet is ok!!! A f#%k up of a tortoise. Handed over yesterday by someone who had to be clever to acquire her from the owners who knew better. This tortoise is now struggling, the eyes show it. I am currently her 5th home that we know of, so the stress from moves will not be helping her to cope with deformities. Now I have to form a plan for her! And clean up someone else’s mess. Vets come across situations like this all the time and can’t moan or put it out to the public. But I can. If you have a tortoise, research, research and then do more research, and keep them as close to how nature intended within constraints of captivity, as you can. Supermarket produce is junk food Nd will lead to health issues and in this case early death. All because an owner thought they knew what a tortoise should eat. Like keeping a dog on bread! It would probably survive but would be a pitiful example. Or a child on sweets, sugar would keep child alive but what condition would their body be in. These, people can see are wrong, so with tortoises many are blind to the effects of fruit, salad and veg diet.

Chris Leone to Hermanni Haven

Natural ground with appropriate components, the wonderful sun, safe, edible plant matter of proper ratios, visual barriers, plenty of cover and protection from predators goes a VERY long way compared to life in a box on mulch or other reptile-ready beddings. Put the work into it. 💪🏻💪🏻

A Good Book

It is on everybody's lips today that keeping wild animals according to their biological needs must be modelled after nature. The respective models exist only in truly original habitats with their microclimates marked by islands of warmth within original maquis and not in areas altered by man. It is exclusively here where the little-adaptable tortoises can live out their ways of life and develop natural population dynamics to the extent imprinted on them during their 230,000,000 years of evolutionary history. This book with its 37 chapters provides unique insights into the natural habitats and the ecology of European tortoises. This is a must-read book for every tortoise enthusiast. Only if their keeper knows how tortoises live in the wild can these little-adaptable animals be cared for in a manner that will come close to a natural situation. I am certain that you will find many details you were not previously aware of, that these will help you understand the one or other behavioural expression of the tortoises in your care, and that you will view them from a new perspective. The comprehensive book is structured in the chapters Preface - Introduction - General considerations - The Species of Tortoises - Distribution - Secondary Habitats - Maquis - Garrigue - Diet - Islands of Warmth - Microclimate - Home Ranges - Roaming Ranges - Retreats - Population Densities - Spring - Male to Male Combat - Mating Ritual - Hybrids - Oviposition - First Predators - Summer - Development of the Eggs - Fluid Requirements - Autumn - Hatching - Post-Hatching - Predators - Dispersal of Juveniles - Winter. With a Guided by Nature Special and subjekts such as - A Day in the Life of a Tortoise - Light, Warmth and UV Radiation - Habitat Climate Illustrated - Fire - Regeneration - Humped Growth - Relocating and Releasing - The Tick Phenomenon - and Epilogue.
