hibernation

Hi,had hermie bought for me for and i dont know if he has ever been through hibernation,hermie is four and been eating well and seems in good health for hibernation,how many weeks should i do?and also do you gradually reduce the amount off food each day or stop feeding completly for 2or3 weeks before?help much appreciated,the more i learn the less worried i hope:D

Hi its very important to check that your tortoise is a right weight when making this decision. Suggest you check using the jackson ratio. One view is that any hibernation less than one month causes more stress than the benefit from the hibernation. You need to reduce the heat and light over a period of weeks and stop feeding completely for several weeks.
