Like Calamity Jane, I use both -- half the enclosure is sand and soil, and half is aubiose, with pebbles in between. I think I've attached some pictures of it (never sure if I'm successful at this).

Hi Linzi Lou,

It's odd about that. I read somewhere that torts have a great fear of falling, so they are always very careful. Last year, in his outdoor enclosure, there is a concrete step at the back of it and I put a little ramp up to it to see what would happen, and he very carefully went to the edge and looked and then knew how to go up and down without falling off. When I made the indoor enclosure, I was going to put a railing on the side of the ramp (like there is on the upper level), but again he seems to know not to go over the side. I'm still considering a railing just for peace of mind (I've only just set up this new indoor enclosure), but in the meantime, if he were to fall, there is three inches of aubiose below the ramp, so it would be a relatively soft landing.

lol, mine must be thick, as they seem to climb their rounded hut(tunnel)which is a steep drop but then more or less slide down head 1st, and most times land on their back!!! your set up looks challenging, good work nina.

Thanks CJ, I had a lot of fun putting it together. I especially like the little 'stonehenge' (I think you can see it in the second picture) that breaks up the sightlines. By the way, I did get nervous about not having a railing on the ramp (despite what I said about Boris being so careful, etc.) and I added one last weekend (pic attached).

Hi Darren
I use 50/50 sand/soil in one half and wood chips in other half.
My Horsfield loves digging into the 50/50 mix
