Hiya! Just to check, is it normal for a tortoise to be sleeping in damp? I gave him woodchips to lie in and he was all wet this morning. we was at the other side of his area from the water so it wasnt that. could he have been lying in.. urine?

Also, is it dangerous for him to eat his woodchips? I thought theyd insulate him when he goes to sleep, but im, not sure now that its a good idea if hes eating them!

Hi Rosie,

Sounds strange that he was wet. It must have been pee. They just go when they gotta go.

I tried wood chips too - and hay - and sterilized sand, but the best thing for your tortoise is hemp! See if you can find somewhere that sell hemp, it's the best thing you can use as bedding. Also, hemp absorps fluid really well!

rosie,

woodchip can develop mold spurs and hold quite a bit of damp, if i was you, i would get the woodchip out straight away and replace with hemp or 50/50 john innes no 1 compost and play sand. the hemp can be purchased from any farm supplier.

hth

marvellous
