does anyone know how you can tell the age of a tortoise???
also do i need papers to own a hermann???

It can be very difficult to pinpoint age in a tortoise, especially if they have been overfed and have suffered from accelerated growth.
Yes, you do need a CITIES certificate with a hermann

If you go to www.tortoises.net you will find a rough guide to ageing a tort under 5........perhps you could tell us the length and weight and we may be able to get a rough idea.

It is, but the damage may have already been done. If its a young tort, he may be able to get a rough idea depending on the size of the growth rings.
