I keep her in a little shoe box in the shed.

Just kidding!! I have have a proper set up for her - large tortoise table, soil, heat lamp, UVA/B light, watering bowl, slate for her food, cuttlefish bone, some pebbles etc. I feed her on a mixture of dandelions and fresh salad mixes. She never used to be so lazy, she used to be quite active. When I gave her a bath she used to sit for around a minute then clamber up the sides trying to get out. Now when I give her a bath she just sits there until I take her out. She's not active and exploring like she used to do :( she has been like this for around a week.

Hi Samantha,
If she was outdoors and the weather was colder I'd say that was the answer. But it's obviously not, as she has plenty of heat and light.I suggest you get her checked out by a specialist vet or similar, just in case!!!

Freddy

Hi Samantha

Is she still eating? My friend recently had this problem with her 5 year old male Hermann, he was very lethargic and not eating. We took him to the reptile vet, where the vet noticed a pink tinge underneath his shell. He was really poorly with an infection and was kept in and had to be injected daily for over a week.. he is much better now but I won't hesitate to be over cautious sometimes.

Hope this is not the case with yours, fingers crossed it's just her being a bit lazy.

regards
Jeanette & Cola

Hi there,

Sometimes lethargy and not eating are signs of having worms. It might be worth taking a poo sample to the vet to check.

Thanks everyone, she has still been eating but not as much as she used to. I have booked her into a reptile vet for a check up. Hopefully she will be ok! :(

If she has not lost any weight, then I wouldnt worry too much. We as keepers over feed our tortoises to what they would get in the wild. Slow growth is what we aim for.

Hi Samantha,
Inactivity for 23 hrs a day can be a worry. But there is nothing you can do until the reptile vet checks her out. She is still eating which is a plus!!! Hopefully everything will be OK.
Kind Regards
Freddy

Hi Samantha please let us know how you get on. You have noticed quite a big change in the behaviour of the tortoise and I think its important to check it out.

Hi Samantha,
Hopefully the vet will tell you not to worry. That it's just experiencing a few off-days. We all have them !!
Please don't forget to let us know what the vet says and how she gets on.
M
