I stupidly left my dog out to go to the toilet when my tort was outside. She came bounding into the house a few minutes later with my tort in her mouth.

She's not badly damaged but has abrasions and slight bleeding on her shell and carapace.

What's the best way to treat this besides a bath?

Thanks

Hi there,

If it were me I would take her to the vets for a check up. I think with something like this you can't take any chances. She may get an infection in the bite and need antibiotics... but I am not an expert, it's just what I would do.

I wonder what others would use to initially clean the wound? Would the vet be able to offer any pain relief? it would be hard to tell if she is suffering.

Best of luck with her please let us know how she gets on.

I would have to agree with Paula. It would be wise to get her checked out by a vet just as a precaution. I've heard of some keepers using dilute iodine solution to clean tortoise wounds. But I can't be 100% sure if this is entirely safe. However your tort does need treatment so a visit to a vet would seem to be the most sensible course of action to take.
Kind Regards
Freddy

Hi there,

Thanks very much for your replies.

I brought Maya to the vet this morning. He gave her an injection of Baytril and a painkiller injection. I have 5 days of oral Baytril to give her too.
She vomited when she came home. Maybe it's just the stress of it all.

I'll keep you updated.

Thanks again.

Hi There,
I think you did the right thing in bringing Maya to the vet. Her vomiting could be a side effect of the Baytril or painkiller. Hopefully she'll make a speedy recovery. She could also be still suffering from shock. Please keep in touch and let us know how she gets on. Take care.
Kind Regards
Freddy

I would as temps can drop overnight. Lower the heat a little at night rather than have it on full blast. Hope this helps. wink.gif

Just a quick update to let you know that Maya is healing wonderfully and is back to her old self.

Thank you all for your advice.

Lesson learned.....dogs and torts don't mix!
