My Mum's torty is 45+ and has always been given free run of the house which means he's on carpeted floors. I'm a bit concerned over the length of his claws and wondered whether I need to be. Some of them are rather long (3/4 of an inch). He gets around with surprising speed though but do they (or should they) be trimmed?

If the answer's yes, would a vet be able to do it, or would I need a specialist?

If the answer is "for heaven's sake NO" please tell me.

Thanks

Hi Jules,

In the wild torties nails would be kept trim by clambering over rocks and stones, your mum's carpet will not have the same effect. :D

Yes his nails will need a trim. Some keepers do their own trimming but there is a vein in the nail which has to be avoided as it can bleed badly, if you don't have the experience yourself I would definately take him to the vet, he will show you how to do it and then perhaps if needed in the future you would be confident to do it.
