Spray bottles don't work Laura as the moisture is lost to evaporation straight away. You need to water it with a watering can to make sure the bottom stays damp and the top is dry. He needs to be able to dig down to find the damp area than have it all around him on top of the substrate ;)

I used a jug at first but if you do want to buy a watering can the little kids ones are ideal and are starting to pop up in most stores at around £2.50 to £3 (places like Home Bargains, B&M, Asda, all had them I believe).

Just use a jug and pour it around the edges, when it will spread across the bottom which is what you want. Cans are only a couple of pounds on ebay :)
