Hi there I have a 3 year old hermann tortoise as you may or may not already know, he has recently started... To put this bluntly, just discovered his penis I am guessing as I've never seen him get it out before (about a week ago).

Now everything he see's he's trying to get busy with it, like slate, rocks and even the soil substrate!

I was just wondering if there is any reason for this and is it perfectly normal?

Thanks

Jay

It's perfectly normal, but could be because the. Temps are too warm too. Are you dropping temps significantly overnight?

Hi Sue yes they are around 20-22 degrees in the day (31 degree basking spot) and fall to about 15 at night time, also do you think it's too late in the year now to start to hibernate him, he hasn't been hibernated before and really wanted to get it done if I could without rushing as I know it might be a bit late?

Thanks
Jay

No it's never too late to hibernate, providing you have a suitable place and it may well calm him down. At three years old, he should be pretty small still, so would prob only need a three week wind down. This is weight dependant of course. I have a three year old here that weighs approx 80 grams.

Oh dear Sue I'm worried now mine is approx 300g!!! All the shell is smooth etc though and seems healthy enough, I'm going to check again now and weigh him to be 100%

Tell a lie I've just checked paperwork and he's nearly 5 and weighs 310 grams does this seem too large to you Sue for the age? He is approx 11-12cm in length

Thanks

Jay

Not too large for a cb male really. In the wild he would be a fair bit smaller, more like 150 grams. He will be full grown between ten and fifteen years old and will then weigh between 1000 and 1300grams. If he's never been hibernated then he will be a bit bigger, so hibernating should help him ;)

Great thanks for the advice again Sue I think il start the wind down next week then and get it done asap, I've got a beer fridge which can be used so il use that and get the temps right etc first!

Finally sorry to sound stupid what's cb?

Thanks again

Be very careful with beer fridges as they are not rated for food storage and therefore not guaranteed to hold stable temps. I've heard of them giving sudden dips or highs, which could be disastrous:/ I'd contact the manufacturer first if it was me ;)
