It sure is. He certainly seemed to enjoy it...I completed his new enclosure on Friday so just timed it right for the sunshine. :)

We've had some lovely weather the last few days, it's nice to see them back outside enjoying the sun, lets hope it lasts. :)

An unexpected day off work today so Jerry and I have been chillin' in the garden...

I went to check on Jerry yesterday evening and he was tucked underneath the rosemary. Temperatures were predicted to a low of 11degrees so I decided to leave him out for his first night ever...He dug himself well in overnight and took some finding this morning. After a while in his coldframe soaking up the morning sun he was soon up and about.

Here's a photo of Jerry in his night quarters  :) ..Can you spot him?

I bet Jerry enjoyed his night out, and his nice warm up today. I bet his cold frame was a great experience for him. I am looking at getting a sheet of Lumisol to develop a warming up area. Apparently it is something the Tortoise Trust recommends and allows UV through. A lot cheaper than the stuff I bought for Tort Lodge. X x x xhugs x x x

I have to say that I have been amazed at the temperatures obtainable in my coldframe. It can be 15degrees higher than outside temps and I'm told that a tortoise can generate another 10-15degrees on top of this. One has to be aware of the potential of overheating though. I've made a few tweeks to the design recently including lighter substrate to reflect IR (makes it easier for Jerry to walk on). Also I've implemented a system were I can adjust the partial shade over the coldframe as the weather dictates and on sunny days I lift the lid a few inches for air flow.

I built it myself out of a wine crate (top and bottom removed) and the perspex is  UV tranmissible.

The Lumisol has the potential to change the way we all keep our tortoises, certainly something I'll be utilising as Jerry's enclosure gets bigger.

Will be interested to hear about your experiences with it, Stella.

Oh dear Keith...here's pressure. I had the Uv stuff for Tort Lodge, at great expense and not sure that it serves the purpose properly so looking at the Lumisol as a covering between Tort Lodge and the conservatory (greenhouse) extension for spring/autumn I think the financial benefits are much better at 13£ for a big sheet and from what I read will extend torts outdoor experience by weeks. Just hoping my newly retired mate will embrace the need to develop like I do x x xhugs x x

While cold frames are great for raising ambient temps, its still important to remember that its actual basking temps that raise the core heat of the actual tortoise, so we still need basking facilities both inside and out ;)
