Me and my family have had our tortoise for about 7/8 years now and only recently he seems to have a problem with breathing. He started opening his mouth while he was breathing a few months ago but we thought nothing of it but it has recently gotten worse.  He open his mouth completely when he breathes now and seems in pain. His shell is also quite soft and he hasn't been eating and we are now very worried. We are taking him to the vets as soon as possible I just wanted to know if anyone has any idea what the cause could be and whether it could be potentially life threatening? Me and my family are willing to do whatever we can to make sure he gets better.

If his shell is soft it sounds like possible vit D3 problem. What are you supplementing him with and is it still in date? You should really have taken him to the vet when the gaping started as this could be a serious respiratory problem. Make sure the vet you use is a specialist as most normal vets are not much use with tortoises. Good luck.
