Hello,

My tortoise unfortunately passed away a few days ago and we had him for 8 years so it was a very sad day. The vets are still not completely sure what caused him to pass away but it is likely to have been poor diet which affecting him for longer than we thought and his shell was extremely soft. They said that we could donate him to the vets so they could do more research into Hermann tortoises and the cause of his death but I am unsure whether this is a good idea? It would either be that or cremate him as I don't think me and my family want to bury him. I understand that this is a personal decision for our family but I would like to hear what other people have to say and we have said our goodbyes.

Thanks

Gemma

Hi Gemma...I'm really sorry to hear that your tortoise lost his battle.

What happens now is, of course, entirely your decision but I think I might find some comfort in the veterinary option.

The more knowledge your vet receives on the species, the more it will help them save others in the future.

Hi Gemma
Im so sorry to hear this :( i agree with Jerry, most vets have very little knowledge in the reptile world unless specialists so more knowledge they learn the better but the decision is yours

So sorry to hear about your tortoise, Gemma.  :(

What to do with a pet's remains is a very personal decision and my own preference is to bury any deceased pets in the garden (although I did have my elderly dog who died last year cremated as we keep threatening to move house and I didn't want to leave him behind).

I tend to agree with others on this, though. The veterinary profession would benefit from learning more about reptiles and you might - in time - feel better about the loss of your much-loved pet if had potentially helped others.

It has to be your decision - you must do what seems right for you and your family.

Chris

I think you will find a bit of comfort knowing he will help research to understand these lovely creatures. Well done Gemma, it was a brave decision you have made. Tight hugs x x x x
