Tortoise Theft - Northwich, Cheshire.
Overnight 10th.11th. December 2015 thieves entered a shed situated in the garden of a private house in an isolated area of Northwich and stole seven young Spur-thighed Tortoises from their heated vivarium.
They were born approximately ten years ago and are currently ranged between 8 and 15 cms in length.
This was a planned crime and the animals have been specifically targeted.
These juvenile Tortoises are not currently in hibernation and we are therefore deeply concerned as to their welfare.
Whoever is responsible for this callous crime may not be in a position to care for them especially as to their needs, comfort and necessary nutrition.
We point out that this particular species is subject to CITES Annex A legislation and cannot be traded legally without an Article 10 licence issued by the Department of the Environment..
Anyone offering the Tortoises for sale without such authority commits the serious criminal offence of trading illegally in endangered species carrying upwards of five years custodial sentence and the same applies to anyone so purchasing them.
We urgently need any information as to the whereabouts of these Tortoises and any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the thieves.
If anyone can help, please call John Hayward, National Theft Register Tel; 01869 325699 Email: jh@ntr.supanet.com

Despicable. Let's hope the press concentrates on the legalities rather than making silly claims as to the value of the animals, which only makes them more stealable.
