RED FOOT TORTOISES
Hi, I am a captive breeder of Red foot tortoises. My work is completely ethical and I work closely with the Tortoise Trust and a leading reptile specialist vet. I also provide a permanent home to rescued tortoises who have had traumatic or neglectful past lives or been smuggled into the country in crates!
As a hobbyist breeder (not commercial!) I incubate and hatch a some eggs each year and the babies I sell to CAREFULLY selected families who can provide the correct husbandry and welfare for the duration of the tortoises life, which can be 75-100 years! The proceeds from the sale being used to pay for medical care and up keep of the rescues that I care for.

The aim of my work is to educate keepers correctly and prevent people buying from the cruel and ruthless pet trade where tortoises are farmed abroad and imported for sale in pet shops. They are often then subjected to glass tanks (vivariums are outlawed as cruel under the 2006 animal welfare act) and they are sold on to novice keepers with incorrect substrate, food, enclosure and guidance. They are then sadly confined to a life of misery behind glass looking at a world they cant access, usually being fed a high protein pellet diet, subjected to incorrect and prolonged use of heat which ensures their deformed growth and health problems such as bladder stones. The keepers usually then realize the tortoise is stressed as it spends its life scraping at the glass and they wind up being offered for re-homing on websites or worse just chucked out or hurt!

If you want to do it properly, avoid supporting the suffering of the pet trade and have a tortoise to join your family that is healthy, happy and friendly then please contact me.

My tortoises are well looked after, I am with the eggs when they are laid, incubate the babies myself, they are handled from hatch and guaranteed to be of first class condition. With the right care and set up, which does not have to be expensive, they should outlive you, living an average of 100 years.

To house a baby tortoise, you will need an open top tortoise table or indoor rabbit cage (the plastic bottom type), substrate which is 50/50 plays and and topsoil, feed a weed diet, nutrobal calcium supplement, a heat/uv combined lamp (with lamp stand) and that's pretty much it! You do not need bark chip, heat mats, uv tubes, vivariums and you definitely do not need pretty colored pellet food.

PLEASE PLEASE IGNORE THE "ADVICE" OF PET SHOPS AND GARDEN CENTERS. THEY ARE, IN THE MAIN, JUST DEALERS BUYING IN IMPORTED FARMED TORTOISES AND SELLING THEM ON WITH LOTS OF EXPENSIVE AND UNNECESSARY EQUIPMENT TO MAKE AS MUCH MONEY AS POSSIBLE. THE TORTOISES OFTEN CARRY PARASITES AND HAVE HEALTH ISSUES, POSSIBLY EVEN CARRYING CHV! (CHELONIAN HERPES VIRUS - A KILLER!)

Please contact me with any further questions.

However, if you intend to use a vivarium, then do not expect to buy a baby from me. It would be like you living in a greenhouse, locked in and never allowed out. I will not subject thinking and salient, enigmatic creatures to such a cruel life of misery!.
