Hi just an update on Wilbur,

This is his second day without food he has had a bath and has had a small poo, his weight is still 800g..

He seems ok, is still alert and basking..

I hope I am doing everything right..

Sorry measured him incorrectly -  his weight is 800g and he is 6.5 cm in length..which comes out at 0.195 on the calculator,

Phew - sorry... your thoughts

xx

How are you measuring him? Those measurements are quite a way out. An 800 gram tort would be much bigger than 6.5 cms.

I put him against the wall with a paper under him and marked it with a pen..

Yes sorry its 16cm..not 6.5...don't know what head I had on yesterday..

He had a bah yesterday and did a big poo.. today is his second day without food and he had a bath this morning and did a little one.. he is basking ok and is quite lively..

I am keeping a note of what he does and what his weight is.

like I say I hope I am doing this correctly.

Thanks Carol x

If he's very lively, then reduce the temperature Carol, by raising the lamp level. While they are slowing down they need to be much less active, to mimic how they would be in nature. He will lose a little while ge is winding down and then a little more when guest in hibernation, as he settles into hibernation properly. After this he will remain more stable. Allow a 10% max weight loss, but it is likely to be much less than this if humidity is kept up.

Hi Sue

For Wilbur's third day, I weighed him this morning and he has lost a gram, He had a bah but he didn't poo.. I hope this is normal..

I have done what you have suggested Sue and raised his lamp level, Thankyou for that..

We have put a thermometer in the garage to see how the temps are going, so will monitor them this week.

Thankyou

I'm sure you are doing fine. Just keep in mind that he will need some heat to help digest what food is in there, but not enough to make him too active. We all feed bad withholding food at first, but once you get the valance of heat right he won't want to eat anyway. Some torts do it all on their own, the majority of my bigger ones do, but others need more of a helping hand. Don't worry, there's always someone here to help ;)

Don't be concerned it is normal for him to go to the toilet at this point he is still digesting food he ate and that won't have passed through yet. I prefer at least a couple of weeks with basking to be sure the last food eaten has been digested and is on its way through the system. The danger is from undigested food.

There's really no guide as to what day he poops etc. It all depends on temps, activity and fluid intake. The long wind down period is to make sure he is empty and therefore safe. Food is digested fairly quickly, but still takes a while to pass through the intestines completely. A tiny bit left in the lower intestines won't hurt, as it will have left the stomach, but can turn a little harder than usual, so makes it a bit harder to pass if left all winter. Hope this helps ;)

Heat should be reduced gradually from the outset to mimic natural conditions. If torts are still active when winding down, then heat needs to be reduced to prevent too much weight loss. Hope this helps.

Hi Sue

That does make sense, I will reduce it a little more and see how he goes.

Thanks again
