Thanks Carol, although I've just found out he's a Horsfield tortoise - just discovered when I chased up the pet shop for a certificate!!!

No, definitely wanted a Hermann's - luckily the seller was happy to take back the Horsfield and let us have a Hermann's so we now have Marcel 2 at home!

Did the seller wash hands after handling the horsfield? Hope so as cross contamination is the biggest killer of pet shop tortoises. They should be housed separately and strict barrier hygiene should be observed between handling species ;)

Unfortunately, I bought from a pet shop - hence the reason I mistakenly ended up with a Horsfield rather than the Hermann's I really wanted in the first place - I don't think hygiene was their first priority! Not good as I'd spent £400 on the set up so thought they could have at least got the tortoise breed right!

Wow! That's not good mate. Could you not return it and buy with advice from here. That's a heck of a lot of money to spend

Hi Simon,

This is really bad practice when they don't know the difference in species from a Horsfield and Hermann, do you have a certificate with the new Hermann. x

Hi Karen, yes - it was the lack of certificate that made me worry and start to question the breed so yes, I made sure I got a cert this time.

The good news is that my new Hermann has settled really nicely so I'm hoping to put this behind me any enjoy him going forward.
