I just got a 54 watt ballast with a 39 watt 12% UV light tube from arcadia. The tube is a T5 and it hurts my eyes when I look at it. I was wondering if this will hurt my tortoises eyes the tube is about 13-14 inches from the substrate. Should I get a reflector?
This is the tube I'm using https://www.amazon.c...0?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is the relfector they sell

Arcadia is a very good brand, and the eyes of reptiles are different from the eyes of humans. We have evolved differently :)))

My babies have never shown any signs of discomfort and avoidance of these 12% UV lights. In fact, they circulate happily under the 12% UV and often stay under it for a while.

If you put the reflector, it will avoid the UV to glare in the room and therefore in your eyes. The reflector will also maximise the UV exposure in the enclosure for the benefit of your tortoise.

Absolutely not. Your eyes would hurt if you looked at the sun too, which is much more powerful than any uvb lamp. There are lots of comments about lamps being dangerous to tortoises, mostly unfounded. The clue is in giving them the choice, so they can get out of its rays whenever they wish. Reflectors are always a good idea, both to protect humans eyes and to maximise the uv to the tortoise.
