#61772 Autumn's Coming

Posted by Freddy on 25 September 2014 - 06:37 PM

Hi Little Miss,

If your torts are slowing down you will need to bring them inside to their tortoise table and keep them going for a few months yet.

The recommended hibernation length for a 1 year old tortoise is 8 weeks with wind-down of about 14-18 days, usually beginning December. Hopefully there will be others along shortly to offer you more, helpful advice.

Best of luck

Freddy

#61751 Hibernating My Little Baba

Hi Matt,

I think you should be aiming for 8 weeks maximum if hibernation is to have any benefit.

As Karen says if there are any problems regarding weight loss etc. you can always pull out early.

Here is a link which you may find useful http://www.hermann-t...downperiod.html

Hope it helps.

Best of luck

#61563 Howdy!

Posted by Freddy on 19 August 2014 - 08:30 PM

Hi Freddy, thank you yes that does help.  It seems with torts there is so much that we can assume will be ok and not fully realise any side effects.  I have done so much research into torts since being given them to be re-housed but there is still so much more that I learn each day.  It will put my mind at rest to know that I am giving them the right environment over winter.  Can you buy the topsoil sterilised, is this a standard that you can buy from a garden centre?

Many thanks

Sue, Lucky's Mum

Hi Sue,

As far as I am aware 'sterilised topsoil' is available. A number of people here on the forum have purchased it. Try 'Wickes', 'B&Q', or other garden centres or simply 'google'. Best of luck.

Kind Regards

#61490 Wondering About Uvb In Outside Enclosure?

Posted by Freddy on 16 August 2014 - 06:47 PM

Hi Wendy,

UVB levels from natural sunlight can vary on different days and at different times of the year . As Matt says even on cloudy days in summer and early autumn UVB levels will still be higher than those achieved by artificial lighting . It is true that with the onset of autumn natural light levels start to decrease. However, there are still a few weeks left in this season before you start moving her inside to indoor heating and lighting. Hope this helps.

Take care.

Kind Regards

#60411 My First Hermann Today

Posted by Freddy on 01 April 2014 - 08:53 PM

Hi Laura,

Just make the soil as deep as your tortoise is long. Also make sure you ask for topsoil at the Garden Centre as other types contain chemicals and additives which can be harmful to torts. Wickes or B&Q are always a good bet.

The guys have given you some excellent advice. Be sure to follow it and you won't go wrong.

Finally, don't be too hard on yourself we were all beginners once upon a time.

Best of luck. ;)

Kind Regards

Freddy :)

#60375 Billiejo's Up!

Posted by Freddy on 31 March 2014 - 06:37 PM

Hi Guys,

I took 'Billiejo' out of her hibernation box today even though she was not awake. After a tepid bath she came around at room temperature and walked about for a bit. Glad to say she is looking fit and well.  Her 33rd hibernation has now been completed. What a relief!  :)

Kind Regards

#59260 Lots Of Advice/info Needed

Posted by Freddy on 30 October 2013 - 12:45 AM

Hi Sue,

I think we are all passionate about tortoises otherwise we wouldn't be on this forum. None of us like to see others exploited.

I think it is great that we can have good natured debates on a variety of tort topics. I for one enjoy giving my two cents worth especially when it comes to subjects like hibernation for which I have some experience and have given advice in the past.

You guys are so well behaved that there is often very little moderating for me to do . It can get boring. lol! :)

I will however try to keep my moderators hat off and join in the fun as long as debates here remain fair, balanced, and good natured.

Enough said ... ;)

Kind Regards
