Hibernation Query

14 November 2016 - 01:38 PM

Hi,

I currently have both tortoises outside in the shed. It is heated during the day with a 120watt heatlamp with temperatures reaching around 30 degrees. There is currently no background heat at night but there is deep soil for them to bury down into,

I have noticed Marl the smaller tortoise is burying herself deep down and is not coming up in the mornings. Is she naturally trying to hibernate? Should I leave her to do this or dig her up each morning. The other tortoise is still walking around and eating.

I was planning on starting to wind them down in the next week or two ready to use the fridge method of hibernation Should I bring this forward?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

Min And Marls New Outdoor Enclosure

Hi,

After months of planning and work min and marl are finally in their outdoor enclosure. The outdoor run is still a work in progress. I plan on adding more plants in the coming weeks.

New Enclosure

03 May 2016 - 09:05 PM

Hi,

I am in the process of sorting an outdoor enclosure for my two tortoises to live in. I have a 5'x3' shed which I am planning on insulating with aluminium foil and plan to have a heat lamp. Please can you advise the best type of bulb to use for this size space?
I will be fitting a lockable door to enable them access to a large outdoor area which I plan on covering with chicken wire. Will just a heat lamp in the shed be sufficient with them having access to the outdoors?

Thanks

Chris
