Could This Be Shell Rot? Or Is She Just Growing?

30 July 2013 - 08:23 AM

Hi All

Tillys been having a bit of a growth spurt recently as you can see from the lighter shell on her plastron, she has been out in the elements for almost a month and has been sitting in her water bowel so havent really bothered her too much as shes been so happy and I have the bench next to her so can sit and watch her, but fetched her into her table yesterday owing to weather change and noticed her top shell seems quite dry (it always has been and she had some shell damage when I got her) and seems to almost be raised or seperating in places.  Should I pop her to the vets? she has a mainly weed/flower diet with a bit of romain or rocket occasionally, I dont give her fruit, and she gets nutrabol 3-4 times a week and has a cuttle fish in enclosure...

If we do need a vet could anyone recommend a good one close to walsall, w mids?

Just Checking We're Getting It Right X

21 June 2013 - 08:15 AM

Hi, Just checking shes growing as should x

as you know tilly is a horsefield and came from a pet shop, (I know the error of my ways before it pointed out  lol) when she came to me her shell felt quite thin and she felt almost hollow when I picked her up compared to the solid lump she feels now.

 On 31/8/12 she was 114g 7.5cm

Over next month dropped to 100g while she settled in

By Jan she was up to 137g still 7.5cm (I kept her up all winter)

and now she is 167g and 8.5cm.

You can see her new growth underneath as its quite light but not so much on top just the rings. No signs of pyramiding. When I had her, her top shell overlapped the bottom, now these have come together.

Shes happy, active (lot more so outside) and greedy if I give her chance, she has one meal a day(mainly weed but bit of rommaine occasionally) and an occasional pansy flower or campanula after work but thats it, using nutrabol 2-3x pw.

Gravel In Outdoor Run

10 June 2013 - 12:38 PM

Tilly has obviously taken a taste for gravel outside, not the only one i gather! So yesterday after much panic i removed all the gravel, and replaced with large ish pebbles... Then put her out she went and decided to go climbing and got stuck between her propergator, and outer wall, so then we had to move that so she has a run around it, she also managed to climb into a plant pot 3' of the ground ... All in aid of a pansy feast! And stuck her head between the mesh grrr that now has to be moved as dont want her toppling on back when we all at work! i definatly have a jeckyl and hyde depending on in or out

Tilly Loves Being Outside

29 May 2013 - 08:47 AM

Tilly's outside enclosure is now complete, she goes outside on sunny days, and is bought back in when the clouds come out, or at night.  When shes out shes a different tortoise, she goes into hyper speed, recks anything she comes across, and is never still.  I am also surprised at how warm she gets, considering the temperature we are getting[attachment=2568:IMG_13761.JPG
