How Big Should A Glass Vivarium Be For 2 Hermann Tortoises ?

21 October 2012 - 05:03 PM

Hi everybody,

I have two hermann tortoises that are only 3 months old, there indoor glass inclosure is 4 feet by 2 feet...
I know that it s big enough for them at the moment and I know that one day I will have to get a bigger one. I have got 2 hides for them, one water dish and a piece of slate which i feed them on.

How long will there enclosure last until I have to get a bigger one?

Please comment on what you think is right.

Best Substrate For Hatchlings & Eating Lots Of Food

15 September 2012 - 09:35 AM

Thank you once again for your previous comments.
Well, the (now 4 week old) hatchlings are eating well, almost too well... I am wondering if they are over eating? I have read it IS possible that a tortoise can over eat, but I am wondering HOW much is over eating? We are feeding them dandelion leaves, romaine lettuce, mallow flowers, endives and a little cucumber (not all that every day, but over the past week).

We give them a bath in the morning, put them under the basking light and then give them some leaves. They then eat for the next 2 hours approximately.

We give them another bath later in the afternoon, and some more leaves and they eat again, but they eat less this time. The rest of the day they burrow down and sleep.

Bath time: One of them drinks a lot, washes his face, stretches his legs, pees and sometimes poos. The other one is less active in the water and we don't see him drink as much. He just sits there and after about 10 minutes drinks a little, sometimes pees, then tries to climb out. I wonder if the more active one is slightly older than the other one ?
They are doing about one poo a day each.

We are thinking about changing their substrate to a soil based one ( we have kept the same as the breeders so far - chanvre (hemp?) chippings). I tried to change earlier in the week, but when we put the tortoises in, I noticed they started eating the soil too, and it had very tiny stones in it. So I took it all out, started again, and put the chanvre back in. We're going to a tortoise specialised pet shop today to buy some coconût fibre or soil, but any suggestions or recommendations are welcome! I would like to get soil, as this would help retail the moisture, but I cannot imagine there is any soil that does not have tiny stones in it?..

Thank you again for your advice. We are loving our tortoises, they are just so fascinating to watch! Your help and experience is really appreciated!

Baby 3 Week Old Hermann Tortoise

09 September 2012 - 05:55 PM

Hello, I just got my baby 3 week Hermann tortoise today. He is in good health and seems fine, but he is not very active today since I got him home. We have a nice enclosure set up for him with uvb light and basking light, but he spends most of his time today under his half log. The breeder told me not to expect him to eat much to begin with. I haven't seen him eat anything yet.
Perhaps he is just settling in. Should he be more active? Can I give him a little bath? What is the best food for a 3 week old?
Your advice is very welcome!
Thanks!
