Good advice guys and I alone will put another heat lamp at the other end off my table, he has a dark area which he never uses at the moment so there will still be an option for him to have a cool area, but I doubt he will use this. He just burrows deep down. I will remove some soil so it is not to deep and hopefully this will help until I can get a temporary VIV.

Sue, you are spot on that winter is not a good time for new tortoise owners. I am getting more and more frustrated by the day that I was told it would be easy to care for a baby. As a newbie, and what I know now I am aware that I could potentially have a dead tort, which would be devastating especially over christmas.

Im feeling very useless at the moment. I can only do my best and I just hope that it is enough for munchkin.

Lots of Love and thanks

Thank you Ozric, This is what I was thinking (about a viv) just using it more as a measure to keep him warm. We moved here earlier on in the year so it is our first winter and obviously when I purchased my tort (As a newbie) I never thought about temperatures, I was just old a plastic box with a heat and uv bulb and to have a warm end and cold end. Should I remove some of the soil in the mean time to stop him burrowing down ? He just wants to go down and sleep. If I didnt wake him he would just stay there...

Sorry Jay for hi jacking your thread.

Thank you everyone

Yep Sue, he is tiny and I think he has lost around a gram. Huey my son has moved the pad, I will keep it all electronically now. He was slightly smaller than the others in the clutch. I now know he should not of been sold to me this young/tiny. I am very worried about him, and doing my best to keep the ambient temperatures up. I have looked at the Jackson Hatchling scale and he is slightly underweight. He has always eaten well until the last few days.

I will take him to a vets for a check up, and I will weigh him daily. I can contact the breeder but sadly I don't think I am going to have any luck/advice there.

To now I have followed all of the advice that you have given and happy for any "honest" advice to make sure he is ok. I am happy for you to email/private message me if you would prefer x x x x x x x x

Sounds like your doing a good job, I am struggling with temperatures here. We moved this year and I can not believe how cold my home is. Lots of draughts, I have put him in the best spot possible but he just wants to sleep and is now not eating. :-( I don't usually feel the cold, but it is sooo bad at the moment. I have even been tempted to use a "viv". He must be sooo confused. I have just weighed him and he weighs 15 grams and I cant find the piece of paper with his previous weight on it :-( :-( :-( Is this an average weight for a 4/5 month old ??????

OMG, how nerve wracking but sounds like you have done a first class job. My hatchling wants to hibernate now so hopefully will be ok for next year. I will look forward to the plan you decide on with Hazel and will probably copy it (If you dont mind).

Are the small beer/mini fridges ok for little ones ?????
