Topics I've Started

Uv And Heat

28 April 2013 - 01:31 PM

Me again

So as my plan takes shape and my list is forming, my next question is one of heat and lighting.  Now I will have a tortoise table.  Not decided which one, or whether commercial or self-made.  My hatchling will be a T h herc.  I have read that for hatchlings, an ordinary lightbulb will suffice, but does it make better sense to have a separate source of heat and UV-B?

I'm struggling with this as do i need both a light and heat source, or just a basking lamp?

How essential is a thermostat and timer, or am I over-analysing everything?

Substrate Clarification Please.

27 April 2013 - 09:30 PM

So from what I have read sterilised topsoil is the way to go, with some preferring a mix with sand - but only play sand, i.e. not-sharp like builders sand?  Can I just clarify it IS topsoil I need and NOT compost?

Tortoise Table For Hatchling - Suitability?

27 April 2013 - 08:47 PM

As I have decided when I decide to obtain my forist tortoise it will be a Hermann's - possibly in Autumn.  I am still researching all the other bits and bobs.  A commercial tortoise table may well be the first solution.  my DIY skills are non-existant and whilst the thought of adapting my bookcase is tempting I worry about the books ;)

One thing I have notice is most selling the so-called starter kits seem inadequately stocked, so the basic table might be an idea, but furnishing it with individual pieces seems to be the route I want to take.

Can anyone advise how long might a tortoise table (commercial) be of use before the tortoise outgrows his surroundings and I need to house him into something bigger?

How Many Species And Sub-Species In The Genus?

27 April 2013 - 08:39 PM

Up until recently I never knew there were so many species of tortoise.  Now, having read my first book, I notice the Hermann have several sub-species.

As a birder/birdwatcher, I know this happens with birds - especially gulls (Herring Gulls) and Wagtails etc. so am aware of the phenomena.  With birds it is oft argued to be more to do with splitting species into sub-species and even sub-sub-species and regionals etc.  I don't get involved with all that as my pleasure in birds is seeing them and although I travel all over the UK to watch birds - seeing as many different species is not the be all and end all.

Back to the book, at the time of writing, it isn't clear if they were official.

So that is twice over the weekend I came across the term Testudo hermann herc.  or Dalmation thanks to my reading and an email from Karen lol.

Are these all recognised and official, or is it something that takes a while for official ratification?

Commercial Table V Home Build?

25 April 2013 - 09:30 PM

As someone looking to setup a home before introducing an inmate, this table along with lighting/heating. substrate, humidity etc. will be a major consideration.  Can anyone recommend a commercially available table for a solitary hermann's - preferably with all necessary extras? - Alternatively, if it is better to buy individual components, rather than compromise, the whereabouts of a solid table or example would be much appreciated.

Apologies if this contravenes any rules re: advertising etc. my intentions are merely parctical for the benefit of my (future) tortoise :)
