He Is Odd.

02 June 2013 - 09:31 PM

Hi all,

Just a quick query regarding my 2 year old Hermanns called Norm. I've noticed that regardless of the weather outside he will always put himself into the corner of his run (face into the corner, bum sticking out). Today has been ideally warm for him yet there he is, bum out in the corner. I moved him onto some warm basking rocks, he pottered for 10 minutes before putting himself back. The corner has full sun at certain times of the day but fully shaded at others but this doesn't seem to impact on when he spends his time here which leads me to think its not a thermo thing. Could he be hiding to avoid imagined predation?...if so he is rubbish at hiding because there are much better places that he can tuck himself away.

Any ideas welcomed

Supplements

Have been adding Komodo supplement powder/dust to Norms weeds. Since rejigging his run he has lots of edible plants. The problem is now that he won't touch his 'treated' weeds and just heads off to the untreated edible plants. Any ideas?

Improvements

Last year I built a run for my tortoise which was a bit sandy, bit grassy and a bit pebbly with an area of coir to bury into inside a house. After reading around and more importantly observing tort behaviour decided for some major changes which I started some weeks ago and are nearing completion-out with most of the grass and in with areas of bark chip, gravel, rockeries (with little crevices to hide in) soft sand/soil mix, and lots of edible plants. Norm now appears to be much happier and roams much much more and seems to behave more naturally. I've tried to look at how Zoos build enclosures and what I have made now looks like a mini version of a zoo enclosure. Its not perfect but I think its much better...any additional advice would be welcomed. Happy tortoising this Bank Holiday weekend. N x

I'm new to tortoise wrangling and have heard about a Suffolk Tortoise Club. However, no website phone no or email addresses available. Can anyone help?

10 Months In

02 May 2013 - 01:47 PM

Hi, I'm Nathan from Ipswich. I bought a 1 year old Hermanns last July called Norm. Its been an awkward first year. I attempted a short hibernation of 6 weeks (on advice of breeder) but had to wake him as he lost too much weight but he seems fine on it. Loving the new warm weather and is tearing about his outside run. Frequently 'lose' him in his run as he digs in the substrate but I'm confident he can't get out so am not too worried. Learnt a lot in 10 months and am getting more confident but still loads to learn! Any advice and comments welcomed
