Topics I've Started

Please Welcome

15 September 2013 - 11:11 AM

Well we had our epic 8 hour round trip to Norfolk yesterday to collect our eagerly awaited Hermanns, and despite expecting to be coming home with a male, we've ended up with something slightly different.  They had recently taken in a hermaphrodite and thought we might like her/him.  We were really taken by her and although I hated having to choose I went for her as I hated the thought of her being overlooked for rehoming because she's different.  She's about 8-10 years old and has lived in a viv all her life.  For the last 4 years she'd been fed on sweetcorn and beans so our challenge is to wean her off the junk food and onto proper food.  The lady who had her for those 4 years 'rescued' her from even worse conditions and her shell was soft when she got her.  She's in pretty good shape now, considering.  We'll get her checked with our vet (Stuart McArthur) this week.  She's settling in well, and we look forward to getting to know her.  Not decided on a name yet so will update you when we have.

And Our Tortoise Table

31 August 2013 - 02:24 PM

We've converted an old wardrobe that was doing nothing. Correx base, lined with plastic sheeting. Some more plants and things to go in and the lights to add (UVB bulb was poorly on arrival and a replacement is en route, and a stand for the basking lamp is also on its way). But you get the general idea. Thoughts?

Installing The Lights

30 August 2013 - 07:24 AM

We've bought the Arcadia D3+ T5 (with reflector and controller) http://www.reptiles....viv-313872.html and a basking bulb http://www.reptiles....cks-391074.html (the 100W ones) with this holder http://www.reptiles....acket-8899.html

I know we have to adjust the height of the basking lamp in order to get the temperature right so does anyone have pics of their set-up that they could post to guide us on how to do this please?

Our plan for the T5 is to make a bracket thing to go over the top of the table to hang it off somehow.  Again can anyone share pics please?  We're not the most DIY-minded so want to make sure we don't mess things up!

Thank you.

Fridge Help

29 August 2013 - 05:13 PM

I am looking at options for a fridge for hibernation.  we do have a wine cooler but it doesn't go down cool enough so won't be suitable.  Would any of these be ok?

Or would it need to be bigger?

There is one on the Argos website but it looks like it might have a freezer compartment http://www.argos.co..../TOP FRIDGE.htm

Or can anyone recommend a specific fridge please?

Thank you.

Hello

29 August 2013 - 02:01 PM

Hi everyone, I've just joined.  I've wanted a tortoise since I was a child and have recently started doing serious research into what it entails.  I've settled on a Hermanns and am now in the process of getting stuff set up.  We spent the bank holiday building an outdoor enclosure (still some work to do on it) and have also started on the indoor one too.  We'd like a rehome if possible, but failing that would go to a breeder.

I live in Leeds with  my husband and our pet rats.  We are already clients of Holly House, the vets that Stuart McArthur owns, so we're ready to go from that point of view.
