Outdoor Enclosure Lighting, Colder Months

12 November 2014 - 05:04 PM

Hi guys,

Just a few questions regarding the outdoor enclosure I have for my torts.

They have been there for a while now and I currently have a 250w infrared heat lamp, this was fine for the summer as they got a lot of their light from outside. But now its colder and wetter (and they never go outside), I think they really need a UVB lamp as well as the heat lamp. I was wondering what size UVB bulb to use? I have been advised to get a 13watt, but have not been told which UVB output to get. I am currently looking at this bulb: http://www.ebay.co.u...-/281156754331?(or item numbe r 281156754331, on eBay if that doesn't work).

Also, on a little side note. The heat lamp and the convector heater have became really dirty and I notice that the torts are often dirty when they haven't had a bath for a couple of days. How do I maintain the enclosure inside to prevent dust? I imagine watering it every week or so would be a good way but id love to hear your suggestions.

Thanks a lot,

Hermann Tortoises Ages 4, Moved Outside.

23 May 2014 - 12:14 AM

Hi all,

I have two hermann tortoises aged 4 years old. I have recently put them into an outdoor enclosure in my garden. They have a large run with plants and water etc. outside. Inside is a largish shed, with plenty of top soil, branches, rocks and a few tunnels/logs. I have an 80W Arcadia bulb which emits UVA and UVB light.

Following the instructions for the light, I have placed the lamp 20 cm from the ground, though with my infrared thermometer, the temperature (on the soil) only appears to be in the low 20's (degrees Celsius). In their table before, it was about 30-35 degrees at the same distance from the ground. This may be because the soil I used in the shed was from my garden as appose to bought, but nonetheless , they still
do not bask anymore.

I also have a heater for when it is too cold, but I have no idea when to turn it on.

The tortoises tend to hide in the shelters or hide in the corner and do not burrow down at night, they also don't leave the shed to go outside unless I move them myself.

Please if anybody could help me out in what to do, I apologise that I have asked for a lot, I'm sure getting worried that they're not getting treated the way the should properly :(

Thanks so much,

What Bulbs Should I Use?

20 May 2014 - 10:29 PM

Sorry for yet another thread, I promise this one will be short!

My Arcadia 80w UV bulb broke the other day after only a week of buying it, and since they're 50 pounds each, I do not wish to get another.

Do you guys have any advise on what bulbs are good?

Thanks, much appreciated,

Building An Outdoor Enclosure And Need Help

21 April 2014 - 07:16 PM

Hi Guys,

I am thinking of placing my two tortoises outside in a more natural environment so I was hoping for any suggestions that you may have on what is best for them? They are both 4 years old and one is male, the other is female.

I have attached 3 photos of their current outdoor enclosure (which I put them when it's warm out). The shed is currently being used for storage but I will also use that as part as their living space.

Please, as many suggestions as you have on what I should do (e.g. heating, plants, obstacles, substrate etc) would be much appreciated.

Thank you,

Unhappy Tortoise? Trying To Escape A Lot!

02 April 2014 - 03:44 PM

Hi all,

I am slightly concerned that my male tortoise isn't happy in his table. He always tries to escape and I must say he is very good at climbing up the little house and pulling himself up onto the edge of the table, he often falls onto his back, though my main concern is why is he trying to escape?
