New Owner, Not Sure How To Hibernate

29 December 2014 - 04:38 PM

Hi everyone,

I have inherited a 3 year old Hermann's tortoise from a friends brother who wasn't looking after it very well and wanted some advice on hibernating it.

It is still eating (got it yesterday 28th December) but seems to be a bit slow and digs itself in overnight, I have a lamp on and it has been awake and about. I know a bit about tortoises (not this species) but would like some advice on what to do. Should I hibernate him this winter or keep him awake as he has been eating? Looking through this website it looks like I would only hibernate him for 8 weeks, with a 20 day wind down period. So if I started now he would hibernate for end of January into March.

How much should he weigh?

What is the best thing to do? I want to make sure I do the right thing, so he is happy and healthy for spring/summer next year. Any advice would be gratefully received!
