Lab Results

22 April 2015 - 05:04 PM

I decided to have a full lab test done out of interest on Herbie and sent it to PALS laboratory. It came up positive for Aspergillus niger yeast infection and recommend seeking veterinary advice/treatment - everything else was negative(worms etc.) Has anybody had any experience of this and the implications/treatment etc. From the info I have found so far it is often present generally in a lot of houses and particularly in soil so wondering if it is from this?

Any advice gratefully received also anybody know of any good tortoise vets in the Gloucester/Hereford area?

Herbie In The Garden

14 March 2015 - 10:24 PM

We had some lovely sunshine the other day so took Herbie for his first look at the garden. The outdoor enclosure isn't ready yet (the shed part arrived yesterday and now needs building!!) so took him on the lawn for 10 minutes where he soon found the weeds!!

Digital Scales

14 March 2015 - 07:51 PM

I wonder if anybody could recommend so really good accurate scales for tortoise weighing. I do have some that were on the cheaper end but tonight when weighing Herbie I got between 28 and 34 grams if I took him off the scale and then zeroed it and put him back on again. Obviously with him being so small this is a huge difference so would like to know the scales are giving a correct weight with regards feeding etc. Any suggestions?

Not Passing Urates

26 February 2015 - 08:29 PM

Herbie has not passed any signs of urates for 10 days or more. As you may remember he passed several large stones not long after I had him and then had quite gritty urates for a bit but he isn't passing any at all now. He is definitely passing urine as his favourite habit is to wee on my hand when I am getting his bath ready (I could swear he hears the water running and decides to have a pee!!) He is bathed daily. Should I be worried about the lack of urates for this length of time?

Thermometer Trouble

14 February 2015 - 07:10 PM

Sorry its me again. At the moment I am having trouble working out what temperature I am getting under the basking lamp

If I lie the probe directly onto the substrate the temperature can get as high as 40 degrees if I leave the probe there for a few hours, however if I prop the probe up in an upright position between two stones then I get about 32 degrees. Which is correct? Do I need to raise the lamp? HELP!!!
