#66666 Confused Newbie Whose Inherited....

Posted by gizmosmum on 27 July 2016 - 07:47 AM

This is what I did. Heat lamp and frost heater with thermostat in little hut on patio, I dug up the paving slabs in places and dug up plantain, garlic mustard geranium etc to put in. She's out there till hibernation. Glad you're choosing outdoors. This set up is great for us cis i can sit and watch her from the conservatory. The glass shelter is an old shower screen, I've put an outdoor light on a timer under it and she uses it on cloudy days. I've fenced it with stud timber from wickes, put some pond netting over it all. Just to give you an idea.

Also use upturned wire hanging baskets to protect young plants from being devoured to the roots. Pegged down with tent pegs.
I agree with Karen, keep watching and solve problems as they occur. Move stones chunks of wood around to enable safe climbing, keep things away from edge to avoid escape.

[quote name="JenB" post="66642" timestamp="1469031942"]Thanks everyone. I was thinking the wall might be too low, I've been looking for a fence to go around it.
I'm thinking of using a spotlight for the basking lamp and fixing it to the side of the wooden shelter area? Would this work?

I've used outdoor security light, 75 watt halogen, it gives 32c ish at shell, using surface thermometer. I use it on cloudy days for a couple of hours, it's under a glass shower screen, but only put it on when I was there at first to check how safe it was. It got really warm at first so I had to adjust the height and only use on cooler days.

Have you thought of an outside enclosure?? Mines not perfect by any means but it may give you an idea., solid wall, 30cm, then wire to waist height, covered with pond netting as we have dogs too. look on here in outdoor enclosures page for other ideas.

Some groups are better than others but I generally get important advice here, fb is OK for chat butlots of different opinions, not always from people who know their stuff as well as sue and Karen do.

Good that you both gave same opinion independently though.

Yes, cage!! I thought she'd struggle with lack of space but she seems fine so far. She spent some time outside in her heated hut, having little wander in her garden when it was sunny on Sunday, but she's back inside now. Temps in hut are 21° and 32°. She sat in doorway looking out for most of time. I don't really want to keep moving her in and out as it'll be confusing for her. So hope she stays settled indoors for a bit longer.

Hi can I please ask how long a wind down period you did? Please see my posts in Help are my tortoises trying to hibernate' and you'll see my concerns. I am inspired by your post but don't want to mess this up. Thanks so much, Brenda

I can't help,I'm new myself. I can only point you at people like matt, sue and karen, these are the people who have advised me well.

Yep, you just think you've got it sorted and someone comes up with something else to think about. I'm new too, so I stick to advice from 1 good source. This site, and its moderators. I listen to others for ideas but run stuff by my 1 source before doing anything. There are alot of 'opinions' out there, but experienced breeders are the ones to believe. But that's only my opinion;-)
