Rather Urgent: Tortoise With Eggs

13 August 2015 - 04:45 PM

Hi All,

I'm posting this on behalf of a neighbour. He's an elderly chap so can't access the forum.

Anyway, he has a tortoise (Hermann I believe) who is around 40-50 years old. The tortoise is kept outside and believed to be a female. Recently our neighbour has noticed that she is digging down into the soil with her rear legs. He took her to the vet to check her checked out, and following an X-ray:

Now there are a few questions our neighbour has (and we've not been able to help with) so I wanted to ask them here:

1. She's not been near a male tortoise, she's kept in an enclosed garden, is it possible for her to have eggs without male presence?

2. Our neighbour would like to do all he can to help her lay the eggs, what can he do to assist? He is thinking of moving her into an indoor enclosure?

3. How can we deal with them if/after they're laid, is it relatively easy or?

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Sulcata Tortoise?

12 August 2015 - 10:55 AM

Hi All,

Yesterday I contacted someone local in Devon as they were looking for help in finding their tortoise and I mentioned that it may have buried down (it was last Friday it went missing and it was boiling down here).

To my surprise the lady (who was elderly) asked if I would be interested in her other tortoise which was a Sulcata tortoise. I said I would think about it (knowing they can get very large) and I'm now puzzling it over today. I do have the outdoor space in order to do it but I've seen on the tortoise protection groups website that they're not recommended for the UK?

What are others thoughts on them?

Vivexotic Tortoise Table

09 August 2015 - 07:57 PM

Hi All,

We purchased a Vivexotic tortoise table for our little Hermann but he seems to be pacing along the glass side quite a bit, I'm wondering whether the 'grass' effect simply isn't good enough to fool a tortoise or whether there is another reason?

Considering buying some vinyl to put on the outside of the glass to potentially fool him and turn it dark.

Young Tortoise Outdoor Enclosure

09 August 2015 - 08:36 AM

Morning All,

Today I am off to B&Q to try and make a nice outdoor enclosure for our young Hermann.

He is 12 months old (2014), we've had him for a week but we've decided that with the weather being so nice, we'd like to have him outside living (event just for the day times) - no one wants to stay inside all of their life!

We're currently redesigning the garden and so we can't put anything in too permanent (yet) but for the next couple weeks we'd love to have an outdoor pen for our Hermann to run around in.

We have a few queries though:

1. We don't have electrics outdoor yet, will he be okay outside in the current weather - we're buying an tortoise/guinea pig hutch so he'll be off the ground and covered at night (will also lock the door) but will he be warm enough?

2. Out ground has a high clay content so can hold water when it rains, could we try and take the top layer off and replace with topsoil? We have a source of 'organic' topsoil from a local garden centre.

3. For a young tortoise how big should the enclosure be?

Thanks for all your help in advance!
