123 Baby Tortoises Stolen From Breeding Facility In The Galapagos Islands

07 October 2018 - 06:11 PM

A local politician says all 123 of the reptiles were taken in a robbery from the facility, which has no security or light sensors.

Thieves have stolen more than 100 baby giant tortoises from a breeding facility in the Galapagos Islands, an official has said.

"They were all taken at once, 123 in all. It was a robbery," local politician Washington Paredes said.

The incident is said to have happened on Tuesday.

The Galapagos tortoises are native to seven of the Galapagos Islands - a volcanic archipelago about 620 miles (1,000 km) west of the Ecuadorian mainland.

Lumbering adult giant turtles are revered as a beloved symbol of the region's biodiversity and a reminder of how Charles Darwin conceived his theory of natural selection.

Galapagos National Park said it was preparing a statement on the alleged theft of the hatchlings from a facility on the island of Isabela.

Mr Paredes noted that the breeding facility where the tortoises were taken from was poorly protected, with no security cameras or light sensors.

"The turtles are just there. If somebody wants to go in by night and steal, they can," he said.

In June, 26 adult turtles were returned to the islands after being smuggled to Peru.

Pest Killed My Dandelions

29 September 2018 - 08:44 PM

Hello everyone
Some black dotty things killed my dandelions in the section where I was growing them. These black dots are on the base of the dandelions and when I took some on my fingertips they are full of blood, gross!
What is this alien thing????

I Can't Fiind Namaste Who Is My 3 Years Old Hermann Baby

15 September 2018 - 07:13 PM

Today was the last day and last night planned outdoors for my two Hermann babies. And tomorrow morning i wanted to get them back indoors.

However today it was impossible to find one of them (Namaste) in order to put it inside the cold frame for the night. I searched everywhere for about 45 minutes inside the enclosure, and no traces of Namaste, no clues left. It is impossible to escape from the enclosure, so it is dug somewhere. The last time i saw Namaste was at around 2pm today basking under the sun, that was when I was checking on both of them.

Hopefully tomorrow it will reappear, but my worry is that now it is not really warm and sunny to stimulate it to emerge.

What can i do? I must find it over the next few days.

Thank you

Continuous Hot And Dry Weather

07 July 2018 - 08:47 PM

Hello everyone

As we all know and as a friendly reminder for new keepers of Mediterranean tortoises (especially those with young ones), with this continued hot and dry weather please make sure torts have an area with damp soil (damp deeply, not damp on top only) where they can dig in at night and also water dishes available during the day. Also areas of good shade for those who have just built their outdoors enclosures.

Of course some fake rain with a hoose or a water can will most likely be enjoyed by our torts.
