First Time Hibernating Advice

02 June 2017 - 09:37 AM

Hi,

We have an 8 year old Hermann and we are planning to hibernate him for the first time this year. I have read lots of useful advice on this website about doing the wind down etc. As it's his (and our) first time, have you any paarticular advice for us? I'm worried he is quite old to start hibernating and now realise we should have been doing it earlier. What month should we start the wind down and hibernating? And how long should we hibernate him for?

Many thanks

Anna

Outdoor Enclosure Advice For A Beginner

02 June 2017 - 09:28 AM

Hi.

We are planning to build an outdoor enclosure for our 8 year old Hermann which he can live in all year (apart from during hibernation). At the moment, he is indoors at night and goes into a temporary enclosure outside during the day. I've read lots on this forum which is really helpful and think we need the following:

1. A predator-proof enclosure with some areas of different substrates and weeds, plants etc. I think we are okay with this bit as there are so many useful pictures on here which we have used for ideas.

2. A house for him to go into at night or when he chooses - this is where we are a bit confused. We were planning an insulated wooden house with a door which can be closed at night so he can go in and out freely during the day. Does it need a heat lamp? If so, what type, what temperature and what height should it be? I've read that a UV lamp won't be necessary - is this right? In his indoor table, he has a UV and heat lamp in one.

3. Location  - we have an area which gets sun from 9-10am until mid-afternoon. Would this be okay?

Thank you

Anna

Treated Or Untreated Wood?

12 April 2017 - 05:52 PM

Hi, I'm in the process of planning an outdoor enclosure and would like to use sleepers for the walls. Is it okay to use treated ones as they would obviously be more long-lasting? I see people have used things like log roll which may have been treated so I wonder if this is okay?

Thanks, Anna

Outdoor Heat

08 April 2017 - 08:14 PM

I'm planning an outdoor enclosure with an insulated hutch/shed. Can anyone recommend a heat lamp and thermostat to use? Would I need UV too for less sunny days. I'm planning on him being outside all the time he's not hibernating.
Thanks, Anna

Outdoor Housing For 8 Year Old Hermann

05 April 2017 - 06:24 PM

I have an eight year old hermann tortoise (Rocky) who mainly lives inside on a tortoise table. He goes outside in a pen during the day in the summer. We would like to build him a more permanent outdoor enclosure and wondered if he could live in this all year round? If so, would it need to have a heat lamp?  We have done lots of research and found lots of ideas but some of these contradict each other so we would like some advice. We are okay about the substrate, fencing and weeds etc needed but would value some advice about heating and whether we should bring him in at night or in the winter. Should the enclosed have a cover on it too (we live next to some woods and there is a lot of wildlife around)? He measures about 5 1/2 inches long and I would worry a bird or other predator may get him.

We haven't hibernated him yet as we were told when we bought him that we would not need to. Having read some things on here though, I wonder if this was poor advice? If we were to hibernate him, some advice on this would be gratefully received too.

Thank you
